This one is from the archives. I don't shoot a lot of black and white film anymore. I took this photograph about ten years ago in Mexico. The man leaning against the wall was taking a break from peddling his limes from his bicycle.

Did you notice that the light got really intense this afternoon right before it started to rain so hard? I took this picture at the beginning of the downpour. Notice the daffodils coming up. I took this photograph a few days ago - those flowers are open now. Maybe you can't see it in this small version, but the bicycle is the same burgundy color as the restaurant's door and the accent color on the building. I like that sense of resonance in a picture, when elements seem to align on their own.

The sun has been more cooperative than expected the last few days, and I've gotten some good shots walking around NW Portland near work. This car is a stunner, and the orange caution cones only serve to highlight the bold color scheme of the car's paintwork.

Hiking up the canyon from Oneonta Gorge this summer I was stunned to come upon this spectacular view of Triple Falls. This is a lesser-known hike, but it's only two miles from the world-famous Multnomah falls. I suspect that if this trail were in any other location besides the shadow of greater waterfall, it would be regionally famous. As it is, only people who have lived in Oregon for years know about this spectacular hike that takes you in a loop to see several amazing waterfalls.

This light leak was unintentional. Other frames were ruined, but I liked how the light leak framed the surfer in this shot. The colorful light leaks at the bottom of the frame echo some of the accents in the image.

Wide Format Fine Art Print at Pro Photo Supply

I just printed up this image of Arches National Park to hang in my lab at Pro Photo Supply. We are promoting fine art printing this month by having a sale, so I decided to do a large print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth paper, my favorite. It looks amazing at 44x44 inches. I took this photograph on a medium format film, so it has lots of detail. The colors and texture of the red rock really stand out on this fine art inkjet paper. Underwater Reflection

This is another image from my Underwater Series. These photographs were all taken underwater in swimming pools.

I love to see how the surface of the water distorts and reflects an object from below the surface. In this image you are viewing the seated subject from below. As you look up through the surface of the water you see both the reflection of her legs and, above it, the distorted image of her torso, which is above water.

Baroque Facade in Sevilla

No one likes this photograph as much as I do. I shot this image looking up through a translucent awning that was being set up for a street festival in a small square. This is a typical baroque-style church in Seville, Spain.

The Last Day for Christmas Orders

I took this photo in Riomaggiore in Cinque Terre, Italy. The light was low and made the stucco housefronts glow. I took this from the Via dell'Amore looking over the little bay.

Venetian Light

When I was young I took a romantic trip through Europe. I was shooting film then - this was before the age of digital - and using a trusty old Pentax camera my father had given me. This was the best image I took on the entire trip. When I printed it the first time, I fell in love with it. I've been printing it and perfecting it ever since.

This image is printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Photo Rag Paper. I do all my own printing. This photo prints up really beautifully, with lots of fine detail. You can purchase it as an 8x10 here or as a 20x24 here.

Boat on Crater Lake

When I was in college I inherited my grandfather's old twin-lens camera. He used to use it in the 1950s when he was a photo journalist. Like other simple mechanical devices of its time, it was built to last, and it still works. I love it for the square format photos it takes.

This picture was taken on an unusually calm day in September. It's very rare to see the lake so still.

I offer this one as an 8x8 here, but I have also printed it much larger. It looks really good as a 20x20, and I have a 44x44 that was hanging in a show at Pro Photo Supply that I'm not sure what to do with. Any ideas?

I had stopped for some food on Highway 101 when I happened to glance across the road. I saw this trailer full of horses with their various expressions of fear, excitement, and resignation. The trailer pulled away right after I took a few shots.

Graffiti in San Francisco

I'm just a sucker for graffiti. This image was captured in San Francisco near Haight Ashbury.

I always love images of doors, windows, and hinges. These simple mechanical contrivances are endlessly fascinating. This photograph has another theme I adore, which is the color image on a monochrome field, which I mentioned in my post Still Life with Scooter. Graffiti in San Francisco has a very similar color scheme to my Roman Spigot photograph. Other images that features graffiti are:

Autumn in Portland

I took this picture while going for a cup of coffee on my lunch break near where I work in Northwest Portland, right down the street from Pro Photo Supply. I sometimes go to this little coffee shop on 18th called The Oz Cafe. They make a really great cup of coffee there. They also have a lot of great pastries and lunch fare.

The climate in Portland never ceases to fascinate me. I grew up in the desert, so I'm always intrigued to see a scene like this; the leaves are dying, but sprigs of something green are just starting to sprout up between the rocks. Is it fall or spring?

I call this photograph Rocks and Leaves.

Chinese Garden Photo

This is a photo taken during springtime at the Portland Classical Chinese Garden. I love walking around downtown Portland during the spring when there are cherry trees in bloom.

Sometimes after work I'll go to the garden and have a cup of tea in the tea house there. It's a really tranquil space in the middle of the city.

This is another one of my cross-processed images. I explained the technique of cross-processing in the comments of my first SLW Bicycle post. My mom really loves this image. She loved it so much she bought it from my Etsy site. Thanks, Mom!

Roman Spigot, an 8x10 Photograph

There are water fountains all over Rome. Some are more ancient than others. This is another instance of an image that appears to have spot color special effects - but it doesn't. I love that look of an image that appears to be monochrome but isn't.

Alex of Upright Brewing asked me for an 8x10 print of this image.

Fine Art Print of Venetian Window (16x24)

One of the best things to do in Venice is to just walk around and look at the buildings. You can see things that you will never see anywhere else: a book store half-flooded from the canal but still open for business; doors and windows hundreds of years old but still sturdy; layers of paint coming off to show layers underneath. Even in the midst of extreme urban decay, Venice is overwhelmingly beautiful.

I have this big print, 16x24, very nicely done on Hahnemuhle Photorag Fine Art paper, just waiting for a home.

Dive (an Underwater Photo)

Speaking of my sister, she was the model for this photograph, Dive.

I shot this on film with an underwater camera. This is the swimming pool of the hotel we sometimes stay at in Mexico, which explains the variegated tiling. The drain in the floor of the pool looks like a navel.

Still Life with Scooter

I took this one in Rome.

There I was, just walking along down an ally in Rome. Scooters were everywhere, as they always are. If there's space to park, there's a scooter. Sidewalks, pedestrian pathways - everywhere they don't get run over, they park. The juxtaposition of the ancient and the brand-new is beautiful.

I'm a bit fascinated with scenes that appear to be partly grayscale and partly color. I assure you that the look is natural to this image - I didn't spot color it at all.

I have a 40" x 60" print of this if anyone's interested.

My First SLW Bicycle Blog Post

My sister just purchased this image from me. She does not spend money frivolously, as she will attest to on her blog The Green Baby Guide. Therefore, I feel somewhat honored by the fact that she chose my work to hang in her home.

I named this one simply "Bicycle." I took the photo in Northwest Portland near where I work in the photo lab at Pro Photo Supply, Inc. I shot this on slide film which I cross-processed for the special effect of the color.

She ordered a custom size: 8x12. I'm hoping to deliver it to her tomorrow.
